4). Mandarin at IHS

Mandarin at International High School

Mandarin at IHS

International High School began offering Mandarin Language in April of 2015. Students at IHS are granted a world of opportunities by studying Chinese, the most widely spoken language in the world. Chinese is made up of many dialects, the primary one being Mandarin, which is spoken in mainland China, Singapore, and Taiwan. Mandarin Chinese characters represent one of the oldest writing systems in the world. In accordance with the NJ State Vision for World Languages, International High School seeks to foster a population that:

  • Communicates in more than one language with the levels of language proficiency that are required to function in a variety of occupations and careers in the contemporary workplace.
  • Exhibits attitudes, values, and skills that indicate a positive disposition and understanding of cultural differences and that enhance cross-cultural communication.
  • Values language learning as a global literacy as well as for its long-term worth in fostering personal, work-related, and/or financial success in our increasingly interconnected world.

In addition to Mandarin coursework, IHS provides after-school language and cultural activities through the Chinese Club, Chinese Dance Club, and Chinese Cooking Club. International High School also plans to start a chapter of the National Chinese Honor Society for the 2017-2018 school year.
